45. Lindbacke - Oppeby (by Nyköping), 8 km

Start: N 58°44.687' E 016°59.635'. Parking at Coop Supermarket.

The trail goes first in a tunnel under the road to Oxelösund and then past the bus station and on to Nyköpingshus Castle. There was probably some sort of defense structure there already in the 12th Century. The castle, as well as the town was established in the 13th Century. The castle and all of Nyköping was burned several times, most recently in 1719 during the Russian ravages. From the castle, the trail follows the Nyköpingsån stream until the end of the section.

Hydropower from the waterfalls in the river and trade through the port helped to build up Nyköping. The original industrial activity was situated at the first big waterfall, Storhusfallet. At the falls further upstream there are a number of old industrial buildings.

A detour from the river up to the main square, once regarded as one of the most beautiful squares in Sweden, is recommended.  The old buildings, the church from the 13th Century that has been extended several times, the town hall from the early 18th Century and the County Council Headquarters from the 19th Century have now been complemented by a modern town hall in marble as well as the interesting new arts centre Culturum which is nearby.
